A friend left for a short stay in Australia today and I took this photo when I went with her to the airport. I like to see people off at the airport because it’s sort of nice to feel the building excitement and nervous tension of the person travelling without having to go through the whole cramped aircraft thing myself. I lost my love of air travel after a long and particularly tedious flight from Jakarta to Berlin and never regained any affection for it.

The waiting times to board are too long, the seats too narrow and the food has long since lost any appeal.
I really enjoy being in new places, but if I have to fly I want the journey over ASAP.

Your spot on with the polaroid look. The border was originally a large format polaroid photo, one a many I’ve inherited from a friend who doesn’t want them anymore.

actually they are pretty crappy images and both he and i don’t think such things are going to be valuable just because they’re old, otherwise he wouldn’t have given them to me. There were a lot of bad polaroid pictures shot a few years ago when they were all the rage. He still uses polaroid 4×5 film, buying all that was available in Berlin a few years ago. But time and use will see the end of this as well…

Well you never know. While living in Taiwan I attended a Polaroid Club. They were really into it.

You right of course, and it seems there is a resurgence of interest in polaroid pictures despite it being €2 a shot with a SX-70 and €10 a shot with an 8×10. Here in Berlin there is large retro crowd, many who shoot Leica film cameras, so I think with the rich and wasteful the older styles will continue for a long while.
I’m going back to Hamburg tomorrow to revisit the Sarah Moon retrospective and I think that the specialist prints she has done are where the future high value prints will be. But who knows, maybe in a couple of hundred years anything retro will be of some value, but I don’t have the patience to wait that long 🙂

it was wonderful, I may be a staid traditionalist but I find fine art prints a real pleasure to look at, add in the talent of Sarah Moon and it becomes a visual feast

I’m pleased the trip went well. I miss the quality of art museums and galleries that I used to get when living on the East Coast. Although some artists and works are good on the West Coast it does not compare to the long history and huge collections found in New York, Boston, Washington and Philidelphia.

I understand and sympathize. While I was in Jakarta the lack of accessible art galleries was one of my biggest irritants. Sadly Berlin is not that great for major galleries either, especially now when three of the largest are closed for a couple of year for renovations. The problem is also bigger than that so if one wants to see a wide variety of work one has to travel, but not as far as from the west to the east coast. And as great as the internet is, it isn’t the same as being there and seeing the real thing.

I totally agree about see work live. There is something about being in the presence of the work in the right atmosphere. When you get to New York City I would highly recommend a visit to the new Whitney Museum of American Art. Their new building is stunning and galleries are magnificent.
